Give Yourself Peace of Mind by Following These Simple Tips

Check on Appliances Regularly

Household appliances offer convenience and make a lot of tasks easier. Unfortunately, appliances are also among the biggest causes of water in home. At least once a year, you should have a professional tune up your appliances. Some of the biggest culprits for water issues include:

  • Refrigerators
  • Water heaters
  • Dishwashers
  • Washers
  • Ice makers

Repair or Replace the Rain Gutters
A reliable set of rain gutters do an effective job of taking rainwater and melted snow away from your home. However, if your gutters become clogged with dirt and debris, they can have the opposite effect. When the gutters don't divert the water properly, it can rot roof shingles and lead to leaking. Also, if the downspouts aren't sending water away from your house, it will pool by the foundation, increasing the risk of flooding. Look at the gutters and downspouts regularly. Clean them out or buy new ones when necessary.

Inspect the Plumbing
Flooding can be caused by a broken pipe, so have a plumber look at your system each year. If you spot cracks or leaks, repair or replace the pipes immediately.

Insulate the Pipes
Another way to avoid pipe cleanup is to keep them from bursting. You can do this by insulating them in the wintertime when temperatures fall. This will prevent the water from freezing, breaking the pipes.
It's never fun dealing with water in the home, but there are ways to keep this ordeal from happening to you. While professional water mitigation companies can help restore your home, you're better off staying away from flooding problems altogether.
